Star anise (Illicium verum) is a star-shaped spice from a small evergreen tree, known for its sweet, licorice-like flavor from the compound anethole, used whole or ground to flavor dishes, drinks (like masala chai), and baked goods, and also for its traditional medicinal uses in digestion and as a source for anti-viral compounds like shikimic acid, but must be distinguished from poisonous look-alikes.
